To be Religious:
Are we Alive or Awake?
Earth is alive, so are the oceans, the mountains, the rivers. Aliveness of the earth.
Aliveness of human beings are different, aren’t they?
The earth, the trees, the mountains are limited by the properties they contain. They function in the framework of the laws of nature.Trees cannot run, birds can’t stay still. Fruits and vegetables have certain specific qualities which they manifest. The kingdom of vegetation has its own properties and qualities. There is an intuitive but mute cooperation between the laws of nature and its kingdoms. From the mineral kingdom to the animal kingdom, instincts and impulses are more fluid in the animal kingdom than in the mineral kingdom. Instinctively and impulsively, the animal kingdom collaborates with the laws of nature as Earth follows the law of gravity. So we can say the animal is alive.
Is this the same with the kingdom of human beings? It seems that the human race, in addition to the instincts and impulses in the biological structure, has a precious gift and that is the gift of reason, rationality. Human beings can reason out things; they can analyse, synthesize, distinguish, discriminate things from one another, the false from the true, unreal from real.
With the help of rationality, they can build on concepts and ideas about life, about reality. And we have been busy on the racial scale of envisioning and conceptualising for thousands and thousands of years.
First, we build up a word out of the sound existing in the universe, we created language. We created the norms and criteria, ideas and symbols to represent the ideas, and we created structures and patterns. Out of the reality of life we built up a perspective of life. We created a world out of reality. This world is a creation of the human mind. It is attached to reality.
So in the name of the religion we created structures and a structural perspective of the unknown. The divine. We created a god, temples, churches, mosques, rituals to worship god we had created. We defined the divinity. We began to describe, attribute motivation to the divine, grafted human qualities upon the god that we created. It has been a gigantic cultural activity of the human race.
