The Illusion of Living: Why Our Modern Habits Keep Us Asleep
How can genuine transformation happen when we are trapped in an illusion?
Most of us spend our lives playing with the unreal, constantly rearranging the past—choosing, selecting, and rejecting what has already been. But as long as we remain stuck in this cycle of managing yesterday, inner tension and conflict are inevitable.
A merciless analysis of life is bound to be painful. It destroys the comforting illusions, myths, and beliefs we have nurtured for generations. But if we want to truly wake up, we have to look at the forces keeping us asleep.
The Consumer Trap
Look at the world around us. People are utterly overwhelmed by the endless wave of consumer goods driven by our highly advanced, technological world.
Governments, industrialists, and business leaders keep us perpetually distracted. They force us into a lifetime of choosing, buying, and working endlessly just to afford things they have convinced us are essential. Corporations systematically manufacture psychological desires. We blindly chase them, wasting our lives in a superficial game and succumbing to the pressure.
The Illusion of "New" Ideologies
This distraction goes far deeper than material goods. The systems around us keep us occupied with rigid codes of conduct, political ideologies, and spiritual labels—pushing us to become religious followers, seekers, or self-proclaimed gurus.
But this, too, is a trap.
What we experience through constant mental chatter, knowledge, and memory is no more real than a dream. We spend our lives imitating, conforming, and aping the experiences of others.
True conformity is a second-hand life; it is merely pretending to be alive. It forces us into systematic repetition. Even when we think we are changing, we usually just swap old repetitive habits for new ideologies, new slogans, and new rituals. We fall right back into the same rut, trapped in a new pattern of conformity.
The Split: Outward Prosperity, Inward Poverty
As long as we equate the act of living with the movements of the mind, we are not awake. To be truly alive, we must establish direct communion with reality, not with concepts and ideas.
Consider this fundamental truth:
-
Life is a reality; the world is a concept.
-
The human person is a reality; society is an idea.
Right now, we are caught in a vicious, unbearable circle. We live in a state of profound contradiction: outwardly prosperous, but inwardly impoverished. We manage an outward absence of war, while inwardly boiling and simmering with hatred and jealousy.
This is no longer just a personal dilemma—it is a question of the survival of the planet. Undertaking this deep inquiry is a global, planetary responsibility. We must step out of the stale world of yesterday's thoughts and finally connect with life as it is.
